RIDLEY'S WORLD:
Seven Nights of Creation
Film Festival Identity Design

This brief challenged me to create a visual identity for a week long film festival showcasing the films of Ridley Scott. I decided to express Scott's bold personality through every aspect of this identity design, celebrating his creative background and his ability as a 'world-creator.' The film festival identity focusses on the theme of creation and creativity, playing with the idea of Ridley Scott as a creator of worlds — this idea stemmed from the way in which Scott dominates as a film director and takes full control of every detail of the production of his films. For this brief I produced seven commemorative film posters, a large-scale poster advertising the film festival, a fifty page keepsake programme, ticketing, merchandise and a website. The logo design uses Gill Kayo as the primary typeface and FG Jason as the accompanying handwritten script.

Ticketing
7.5 x 14 cm, printed onto Zen Pure White from the G.F.Smith collection

For the individual film festival tickets I created a rationale that assigned each film a colour from one of the seven colours that make up the colour spectrum. These colours make each film easily identifiable and tie into the underlying themes of creation that have driven the identity design. These colours are used throughout all the deliverables of the brief, from the posters, to the merchandising to the keepsake programme. For the week long festival pass I created a lanyard made up of eight pieces of card, showcasing all seven films in all seven colours.

Keepsake Festival Programme
22 x 22 cm, perfect bound, printed on Zen Pure White from the G.F.Smith collection, set in Caspari from the Dutch Type Library

For the cover design of the keepsake programme I printed with holographic foil to represent the combination of all seven colours used throughout the visual identity. The programme narrates Ridley Scott's life and work through his experience working on each of the seven films from the film festival, celebrating his North East origins and his creative personality. The narrative takes a personal, anecdotal perspective, showcasing original artworks from Scott himself.

Commemorative Film Posters
42 x 59.4 cm, series of 7

I created a series of film posters for each of the seven films showcased at 'Ridley's World' film festival. The design for these film posters was driven by the colourful visual identity that I had established and was greatly inspired by the idea of conveying a moment of creation. Through a playful twist on a classic motif I established a style and layout that would work consistently across all seven posters. The posters represent Ridley Scott's direct interaction with the making of his films, with his hand reaching down towards a single image that symbolises the story and the film name radiating from the middle suggesting a spark of creation. The imagery in the posters is composed of found photography that is then run through Corel Painter to create a realistic oil painting effect that relates back to the original inspiration behind the design.

Main Festival Advertisement Poster
59.4 x 84.1 cm

The design for the A1 festival advertisement poster was also inspired by the idea of conveying a moment of creation, however the design is much more typographically driven with a strong focus on the creative visual style of the identity. Pencil lines radiate out from within the 'O' of 'Ridley's World' suggesting a sense of expansion and creation of something from nothing.

Website

The website design follows the same rationale as the rest of the identity, using the same duo-tone imagery from the ticketing and the scribbled pencil lines from the programme to highlight information. The website uses all seven different colours for each of the seven films and makes use of both the Caspari and FG Jason typefaces.
