ATENEO MIXOLIDIA
HEADQUARTERS FOR CONTEMPORARY MUSIC ATHENAEUM

FOR THE CITY OF MARACAIBO, ZULIA
ARCHITECTURAL DEGREE THESIS, UNIVERSIDAD RAFAEL URDANETA
Ateneo Mixolidia was designed as a response to the situation of the musical environment in the city of Maracaibo. Musicians in this city lack the resources to get the equipment to develop their skills and experiment with new sounds, and thus they don't exploit their potential to the fullest. That is why a study of the local population of musicians in training was carried out and the idea of a landmark building that is capable of bringing all the experience of professional development in composition, performance and musical production in the same place is conceived.

It was sought that the design of the building was made as a songwriting process. For this, the elements of rhythm and melody were taken and analyzed to extract concepts that can be translated into architecture, thus the generating concept of ˝Scales in Flow˝ arises. Musical modes and scales were used, which are patterns of notes that structure the melody in the musical composition and each one evokes different emotions. Each scale was translated into formal, functional, sensory and spatial criteria and the idea of flow was used to represent movement and rhythm in music through an organic language that linked all musical scales  and modes in the same style.
In the design of this center, the use of four basic areas was also taken as a concept criterion: the Academy Tower, the Concert Hall, the Recording Studio and the Shopping Center. Thanks to the implementation of an underground parking lot of 301 places, the user will also be able to enjoy a plot designed as a public space, whose use serves to promote the urban development of Calle 77 5 de Julio.

The Academy Tower is made up of a vertical volume similar to an inverted truncated cone, in which 19 classrooms are located and lessons in music theory, keyboard, guitar, bass and percussion are taught, as well as the two rooms for editing workshops and musical and instrumental ensembling lessons, offering the ideal facilities for comprehensive learning. Its expansive vertical shape resembles the Doric mode, which represents learning, work, history.

The Shopping Center acts as a central module and handles a great variety of uses that favor the development of the musical environment in the city. It houses a restaurant, a terrace bar, a presentation area, an express practice area, a night club, an instrument store and more complementary uses. Being the center of the building and connector for the different areas of it, the Ionian (major) musical scale was chosen, which gives a feeling of familiarity and home, represented in architecture with simple shapes and welcoming spaces.
Located on the lower floor of the Shopping Center, the Recording Studio area houses rehearsal rooms, group recording, individual recording and editing rooms. Professionals can provide their services to three groups simultaneously without the need for waiting time. The Recording Studio area also favors the learning for the academy students, who can perceive in person what the process of producing a musical work is like.
Finally, located on the west side of the building, the Concert Hall has an approximate capacity of 400 seats distributed in two levels. This allows it to position itself as one of the most prestigious music performance centers in the city of Maracaibo. Its bold form represents the bravery of musicians in creating innovative pieces and seeking to reach new horizons in art. The musical pattern that was used to represent boldness in architectural design is the Blues Scale.
Taking into account the high temperatures of the city of Maracaibo in the distribution of spaces and selection of materials, passive cooling techniques were used. Such as the use of vegetation (reducing the temperature up to 6 degrees Celsius under its shade) in the perimeter of the project, and a floor layout that favors the flow of trade winds that come from the northeast. As well as thermal and acoustic insulation through double wall systems, air chambers in windows and strategic material selection in recording and presentation spaces.
The most important point in favor for the design of this Athenaeum is that it serves as the ideal architectural expression of horizontal learning in the career of contemporary music in this city. Theory, execution and production are a fundamental part of this process and when taught in parallel, they produce a true integral growth of the student.

Additionally, the design methodology based on musical scales used in the generator concept is an innovative way of mixing two completely different arts; music and architecture. Based on the sensory study of each musical scale, quite successful and usable formal, functional and sensory results are achieved in the final product. This methodology can be adapted to different branches of the study of architecture and achieve results never seen before.
