Tjikko

Tjikko was a project made together with Alice Mikkelsen and Katalyn Barraza Merino nomineted for PIDA Packaging Impact Design Award 2019 Sweden.
Concept
The brand of Tjikko is based on the theme of the sustainability of the Swedish forest and forestry. It was named after the Swedish tree Old Tjikko, whom is proving the durability of woodland with its nearly 10 000 year old root system.
Tjikko is an alternative for one time use shower gel, shampoo or conditioner, designed with travellers in mind. Tjikko is not only reducing plastics but also completely replacing them, therefore neglecting the harmful use of oil. The use of cardboard makes Tjikko unique on the market.

Sustainability
Tjikko is opening up a sustainable choice of packaging in a product group where alternatives are lacking. When our user are abroad, and has paid big money for their vacation and a chance to relax, recycling might not be a main interest. To find a recycling station for plastics is often hard nonetheless, if not impossible. The traditional plastic packaging might end up in bins for combustibles, or even in nature. Instead, Tjikko’s cardboard would make a considerably lesser threat to the environment, regardless where it might end up

Packaging Design
The product is opened by opening a perforation in the shape of a fir. The sleeve is then taken off, revealing info about the company and releasing a folded loop on the bottom capsule. The five capsules are connected and can be folded out to a string for hanging on a hook, but can also be taken apart through ripping the perforation between them, or they can be kept stacked on each other. The individual capsule is opened by breaking it open using a partial cut, which makes it possible to keep liquids in it. The finished product will be covered with a bio-barrier on the inside, protecting the cardboard.
The construction has been modified to make filling possible by making the capsule possible to glue together only leaving the upper side as a lid. This makes the shape of a container to put the soap in before gluing it all together. The material used for the body is BillerudKorsnäs Light 250 gsm, being foldable but also stable enough to meet the needs of Tjikko. The sleeve is made from White 235 gsm because of double sided print requirements.
