Sense Typography Magazine

The brief was to create a typographic issue magazine in which the cover, imagery, and typesetting reflect its content. The main articles include an excerpt by Robert Bringhurst and an interview with Marian Bantjes. ‘Sense’ connotes to our emotions and would attract one of our five senses – in this typographic issue it is our vision. The contrasting neon colours and the layering throughout the magazine will captivate our visual sense.

The masthead resembles a bridge which aims to represent the idea of connection which the readers are able to gain by reading insights from each article. It’s best described as ‘getting a better sense of something’.

Marian Bantjes’ article mentions the beauty of print as readers are able to touch the paper. Hence, I wanted to create an urge of wanting to touch the cover for the readers through textures. I created this textured image with a dry-brush. This would run from the cover to the back page to reinforce connection.  A prominent quote from Bantjes, “a nice contrast between the mechanical and the organic” is reflected on the cover. There is a contrast between the sharp structure of the sans-serif typeface while the imagery is hand–generated with a soft brush stroke.

Inserts were utilised to hide pull-out quotes to add depth and engagement. When revealed, the reader also gains a better understanding of the context. Similarly, the use of acetate and polypropylenes reflects Bringhurst’s ideology that typography has layers of intricacy. Once all the layers are flipped open, the reader is able to view the different aspects of each layer and how it all collaborates together to create one piece.
