ISTD SUBMISSION 2019 | 'LOST' BRIEF
Awarded: Membership.
I entered the ISTD 2019 awards with the theme “lost” and based my book on my experience with battling cancer - and everything I was forced to lose in order to gain my life back. This project was very personally challenging and equally therapeutic; and resulted in winning membership to the international typographer’s society. The narrative of the book is featured around the four main cornerstones of my battle: diagnosis, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and remission.
I wanted this publication to aesthetically combine the layout of medical documents with a personal diary to match the impersonal vs personal feel of the content. It contains scans of my own medical files and poetry written by myself during the darkest days of my battle. I used a grid system inspired by medical textbooks and challenged myself by employing a colour scheme of only red, black and grey. I wanted the typography to portray the fear, exhaustion and despair felt within the narrative and emotive imagery is used throughout.
