The fast-moving world brings more and more benefits to people. In the contemporary world, there are many additional techniques and tools that make the working process and communication more useful and effective. Internet, television, other innovative techniques, media are now an extremely important part of human life. Society is dependent on these techniques. They give a lot of information, but they affect in both positive and negative ways.
It is obvious that Media influences people of all ages. It enters people’s minds, and thoughts, thrusting upon the opinion, striving to struggle people’s own thinking, showing the “right” (as they think) way of living, eating and voting. However, its influence is not only bad, but also good, when media informs a human making his life simpler. TV news inform about weather, news in the world, TV shows advise useful things, and movies on real events tell experience of other people. Nevertheless, on my opinion, every influence that damages and corrects people’s own thoughts is negative because each of us has a right for the liberty of a thought and a word. Hence, advertisement leads to overweight and obesity among children and youth as they are the most famous and a prime target market. The reasons are their impressive behaviour, disposable income, and maybe compliance. In addition, size of a portion of food has increased over the past decades; thus people have a wrong perception of balance and ratio of nutrition normal portion size.
In 2008, the obesity rate has increased among poor families and children. By the year 2011, this rate has increased even more. Children from families with low income became likely to be obese. Moreover, children from Hispanics and Afro-American families became more likely to be obese than children from American families.
Moreover, food service industry may decrease the size of food portion and use advertisement program to show consumers the acceptable nutrition portion size. Consumers cannot choose products by nutrition content because they do not have information about it. Childhood obesity in poor or low income families became a worldwide problem. At the Union Baptist Harvey Johnson Head Start, a bright preschool in Baltimore, the focus is on behavior. Children now get health lessons, field trips to a grocery store, healthier meals and an hour of exercise a day on a new jungle gym. Sport makes education easier and more effective for children and youth and deals with obesity or overweight. It brings joy and interest in the process of studying and is available for children from poor or low income families. Sport shows relationships between people, honesty and cooperating and helps to understand goals and aims in life. Contemporary university study gives a huge amount of opportunities and skills for students, unfortunately, often students do not take advantage of it in full. I have understood that university study gives a lot of opportunities and helps to gain new skills. Every student should work hard and study well to become successful. A person must be responsible and accurate in order to receive the knowledge and gain new skills. Sport during education is a big responsibility and can be a benefit for a student (when taking an advantage of it). As the result of exercises, lessons, and healthy meals the share of the school’s approximately 250 children who were obese or overweight fell to 33 percent in 2013, from 35 percent in 2010.
In addition, building sporting reality, at the same time people build a bridge to understanding, honor, trust and respect across different cultures. The world is multicultural and productive in solving problems together, and it follows principles of spirit of connection, teamwork, camaraderie and creativity. All sport participants and sport club members of all levels of sport are encouraged and motivated by Australian sport reporting through different sources. For example, the Australian Government established the Australian Sports Foundation (ASF) in order to help organizations increase funds for the Australian sport development. As the Australian Sports Foundation has stated, the ASF operates the Sport Incentive Program. Specifically the program aims to increase opportunities for Australians to participate in sport, and/or excel in sports performance. The program enables eligible organizations to register sport related projects to assist with their project fundraising.
Additionally, PepsiCo decided to give consumers helpful advices and information about managing calorie consumption, and it listed nutrition content on their products’ containers. This action gave consumers an opportunity to count calories and learn what an acceptable daily portion is. The PepsiCo and more than 60 members are involved in the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation (HWCF) that deals with obesity problems. The three basic areas that HWCF provide with helpful solutions about energy balance: the market, the workplace and schools. PepsiCo Hope, PepsiCo's Gatorade brand, the YMCA of America (Y-USA) partnership, the Consortium to Lower Obesity in Chicago Children (CLOCC) and many other helpful partnerships, campaigns and communities are trying to solve the obesity problem. To sum up this paragraph, PepsiCo’s active and positive campaigns support and try to solve the high rate of childhood obesity in the world.
Recently, the statistics has shown that almost 65 % of the American teenagers are likely to be obese or overweight, 15 % of American children are overweight. The information about nutrition content on labels allows consumers to choose healthier products. Subway, the fast food restaurant, gave consumers an opportunity to choose additionally. Subway’s and Jared Fogle’s campaign “7 subs under 6 grams of fat” increased its sales by 19 % for the first year.
In addition, Subway’s “F.R.E.S.H. Steps Initiative” became a national campaign that tried to prevent childhood obesity and educate society. McDonald’s Corp., Jack in the Box, and Wendy’s Restaurants began to sell salads and yogurts instead of ice cream and fries. These movements and organizations have one aim - to decrease the obesity rate in the USA.
The Slow Food organization believes in the concept of neo-gastronomy – the idea of the plate, planet, people and culture being strongly connected. Our vision - we envision a world in which all people can access and enjoy food that is good for them, good for those who grow it and good for the planet. Our mission - Slow Food is an international grassroots membership organization promoting good, clean and fair food for all. The Slow Food organization provides events every day in many countries and states. These events give an opportunity to strengthen the relationships between producers and consumers and to convey the concept of good, clean and fair food to the general public. Additionally, Slow Food events give opportunities for learning: Taste Workshops, seminars and lectures on worrying questions.
Talking about causes of obesity in different ages, it should be said that probably one of the most significant reasons is genetics. Recently, the genes were something unknown and invisible; thus many different inherited disorders were invisible too. It is noteworthy that an individual can be born with or even develop a disorder, in both cases a serious disorder is a random event. There are several rules, which everyone knows, that help to prevent disorders related to problems with the genetic code. However, there are still disorders that can be prevented by these rules. This means that the genetic code should be tested in order not to have a disorder. Genetic screening tests DNA, RNA, chromosomes, and proteins with the help of a variety of laboratory procedures in order to detect a person’s genetic condition or disorder, heritable disorders caused by his or her genetic situation. In conclusion, genetic screening is extremely potential for humanity in general. It has several problems that should be solved by the local government and the government of the United States of America. Genetic testing can improve and lengthen a life of every human.
Other reasons are environment, psychological diseases, lack of physical activities, eating habits of family and friends, fashion of fast-food, snacking, image of the body and other. Individual, cognitive behavioral or group therapies can help to deal with eating habits and take the appetite under control.
To sum up, obesity has become a worldwide problem. Especially poor families or families with low income suffer from it. Children from these families are more likely to become obese or overweight than children from high income families. Hispanics and Afro-Americans more often suffer from obesity than Americans. Many companies try to solve this problem through campaigns and CSR methods. Although companies use CSR as a marketing strategy, there are still companies with the main idea to help society. Organizations and companies should percept this problem as their own. PepsiCo, Subway, McDonald’s Corp., Jack in the Box, and Wendy’s Restaurants, the Union Baptist Harvey Johnson Head Start, and the Essence of Australian Sport are a perfect example of social responsibility.
