Lofoten Islands

Sleepless nights.

High over the arctic circle there lies a string of islands that protrude out into the unforgiving Norwegian Sea. Here, the sun never sets for one half of the year and never rises for the other, where beauty is equal to Mother Nature’s wild brutality. These are the Lofoten Islands.

There are many Norse myths, legends and tales of the aurora borealis. The Vikings celebrated the lights, they believed they were earthly manifestations of their fallen comrades and gods, while the indigenous Sámi people thought the lights were the souls of the dead and they were to be respected and feared.

Those are their stories but here is mine – a story of cold solitude and sleepless green-lit nights.
