PULP ARCHITECTURE | MADE IN BRIGHTON

PULP ARCHITECTURE | MADE IN BRIGHTON
MASTERS' DESIGN PROJECT | YEAR 2

Pulp Architecture | Made in Brighton is an alternative architectural movement introduced by the non-conventional architects to promote dirty realism (based on pulp culture and Pulp Fiction), unfinished-ness that allowing flexibility, (inspired by the PRIDE community), and the elements of absurdity and carnivalesque in architecture. The Pulps use the principle of ‘gender’ neutral and ‘drag’ as the prime inspirations of the architectural design, which are consist of a modular system and the mixture of different styles. Hybrid architecture and queer space are implied on the buildings to generate multiple programmes for the (un)common and local communities to work, live and practice.
The principle of pulp as a few activities or functions are stitched together to perform harmonious juxtapositions within the spaces beside reducing the idea of demolishing and rebuilding new concrete spaces. This principle will influence the Pulps to speculate the potential spots for creating new hybrid typologies in Brighton, according to their urban nature. Supported by the local council, the universities and the (un)common community, the proposed programmes are rather ‘brutally honest’ in accentuating the pulpiness of Brighton itself, and also providing working places for the artists to grow the business.
Therefore, this project is celebrating the 30th anniversary of Pulp Architecture, curated in Brighton Biennale and the readers may experience the rise and fall of the movement, supported by the urban changes in Brighton and how does it affects the political and social perspectives in the acceptance of dirty realism and the vision of new Brighton as Amsterdam 2.0.
