This was a commissioned project to support software I was designing for the same client and can be seen by clicking here, the designed concept handset was then presented to Nokia, part of my commission was also to produce the presentation for the client to pitch. The brief was to design a rugged handsets for practical workers out in the field, the handset was to visually look 'Strong and Rugged'; The design had to work around the groundbreaking software Panaramix were developing, with the emphasis on their new lone worker alerts.

 

The handsets were to allow an employee out in the field to raise alerts back at head office without needing to look at the phone. In addition to this I wanted to offer more for the client and help design a more appealing offer to Nokia and set out to design a concept that would work across the key spectrum of handsets currently on offer in the market; This includes Standard Handsets, Smart Phone Handset both QWERTY and Touch Screen. To assist the alerts feature I designed the phone so that alerts activation was removed from a core ‘app’ program driven system and move it to physical buttons on the side of the phone built within the chassis. Leaving the aesthetics of the design drive and inform the users intuitively how to raising the alerts, this is performed by simply squeezing the handset in your hand, inside or out of your pocket.

 

The concept I developed was focused on keeping the proposal economical and I achieved this by keeping a consistent chassis across the range of key handsets allowing any one of the 3 handsets interfaces to plug into it. This system of development allows for a greater range of handsets to be produced while keeping tooling on components to a minimum, this design intent was to allow for a greater acceptance for manufactures to adopt the proposition.
