Visual Communication Design - Intellectual Property

This project was about making a Character Merchandise or Intellectual Property. The project was required for Visual Communication Design and Entrepreneurship subjects. By making Intellectual Property, we had to make the character and the product that the character is representing. The required character was anthropomorphic or humanoid. Our character is more on being a devil, Beelzebub inspired.

Background
From the moment we did our survey, our product was chosen as a PC game and food. Our character used humanoid as a base, specifically a devil. Our research included target audience, product, up until our art style that our audience liked. In here, we connected our IP to the said food as it is similiar to his food for power-up. As we made a devil character, we added a bit of 7 Sins theme.
Data & Analyze
- What : our product was a action and horror game with an anti-heroic character (a character who doesn't side with good or evil). Along with our choco ball treat that acted as our character's food.
- Who : our target audiences were Binusian 2019-2020 (who were freshmen at that time). Based on our survey, most of them liked something that has a dark fantasy theme.
- When : we sold our product during Binus Festival.
- Where : we focused our promoting during Binus Festival and online in social media such as Instagram.
- Why : we chose an anti-heroic character because we observed a lot of heroes have a lot of weakness, and our audience no longer believe a pure hero.
- How : we might add future weekly comics, mini-game, and animation to add new content for our customers,
Business Model Canvas
- Key partnership : markets that sells cake ingredients and merchandise printing center.
- Key activity : selling choco balls, character design, and creating merchandise.
- Key resources : social media, cake ingredients, merchandise, and funds.
- Value propotitions : unique IP character, affordable price, tasty and unique treats, and merchandise.
- Customer relationship : promos, interesting offers, cool character, and merchandise gifts.
- Channel : Binus Festival, Instagram, Facebook, and Line.

- Cost structure : cake ingredients, merchandise, promo items, packagings.

Survey Result - Customer
- Based on how our target audience enjoy entertainment, they tend to play a game or gaming.
- Most of our audience spend their time on social media, specifically on Instagram hence we promote our product on Instagram.
- Second option how our audience entertain themselves is by reading japanese manga alongside a western movie, as it then become our sub products.
- The game will be played on PC, based on where our audience mostly gaming.
- For genre, most of our audience prefer an action-based game.
- For items to sell, mostly they prefer merchandise. Specifically a keychain as the merchandise.
- The theme for the game will be dark fantasy.
Market Study - Target Customer
Based on our target customer or target audience, most of them are a foodie, a gamer, an anime or manga lover, and/or a movie addict. That came to the conclusion our main product is a PC game, then our sub products are a manga and a short animation, and alongside merchandise, we sold our signature choco ball.
Existing Study - Reference
We tried to gather references for our product, which dominantly has a dark fantasy setting. Our closest references were :
- Corpse Bride for the horror theme
- Darkstalkers for the demon reference
- Kingdom Hearts for the environment
- Nightmare Before Christmas the environment
- Black Butler for the theme

Based on our observation, our competitors would be :
- Cookie or dessert brands such as Hello Panda, etc.
- Platform games such as Cookie Run, Mario, etc.
- Action platform games such as Naruto, Sonic, Spyro, etc.
Design - Brainstorm
These are our rough sketches while we were searching a suitable art style for our character.
Survey Result - IP
Based on many art styles we made, there is only one which is chosen.
Concept - Character
The character is a demon named Magastri. He is tall, has red hair, one broken horn, he is wearing a suit and dress shoes, and he uses fork and knife as his weapons. Magastri is a devil who feeds on human's emotions by not following any rules. He is one of the rulers that represented the 7 Sins.
Magastri (prince version)
Magastri is a devil prince that is a part of the Beelzebub clan. Beelzebub is similiar to Lucifer, that's why we pictured him to be an upper class devil. He wears a formal suit, dress shoes, and golden fly brooch that symbolize his clan.
Magastri (monster version)
Magastri is one of the Beelzebub clan that rules for the Gluttony sin. He will feed on human's negative emotion without following any rules. By filling up that hunger, he will turn into his monster version. Beelzebub is a fly demon, hence Magastri has more detailed fly limbs and his eyes turned red, both his iris and sclera. We made his skin pale white and has under eye bag. He has metal cuffs on his wrists and one broken horn since he once defied the rules from hell.
Design - Final Character Design
The first design is Magastri in his normal form, provided with his color palette, his height information, his trademark accessories which are his metal cuffs and fly brooch, and his one broken horn. The second design is Magastri in his power up or demon form, which has fly wings and more formed insect limbs.

This is Magastri made in 3D form n standing pose, normal pose, and sitting pose with chair.
Post Production - Final Design
We made 2 posters to promote our game, one is 3D-based and the other one is 2D-based.
Design - Title Design
We have 2 designs for the logo. One is for the game while the other one is for our stand during Binus Festival. We added "Eats" in the second logo because it symbolizes as our character eating the food, as our customers eating the choco ball.
Production - Game
The game is a platform game, where the character has to run and collect food or items that will generate his power up in order to reach the goal faster. On top of the screen will be provided timeline from the start to the goal of the location. There will be a power up bar on the bottom left on the screen, while a pause button on the bottom right screen.
Post Production - Final Design
These are the final designs that included : the final design of the character, the sticker designs, and the 3D model.
