VIVE LE FRINGE ! - poster and brochure

VIVE LE FRINGE !

The Institut franƧais dā€™Ecosse (French Institute of Scotland) is the Scottish outpost of the French embassy in the United Kingdom and has been the come of French culture in Scotland since 1946.

Each year the French Institute produces Vive le Fringe !, the August festivals programme of theatre, dance, music, visual art, literature, and other cultural and community events.

This school project was about creatingĀ  brochures and posters that would be exhibited at the French Institute.
The picture from theĀ  first and the last cover are photographies fromĀ Verhoustraeten JoĆ«lĀ taken during the Festival Ɖclat Aurillac. ThisĀ masked person is wearing a mask and looks like sheā€™s approaching towards us, leavings the different frames that surround her. The cover tries indeed to highlight the surprising side of the festival in a dynamic way : the Festival comes to you because of its intensity.

On the second cover, the blockprinted type overlays differentĀ painted squares. The purpose is to create an abstract visual noise of strong vibrant colors and type to represent the result of the festival from a sensitive perspective. The same process is used for the third cover book.

In the firstĀ poster, the direction is to show the absurd, surprisingĀ  and quirky aspect of the Fringe. Colors and the moon are part of the vocabulary from the dreamlike world to create a magical and surrealistic effect. The horse rider could be the spectator exploring all of the events of the Festival. Itā€™s mounted with a picture from Verhoustraeten JoĆ«l of the show Insomnia from La Compagnie Materia.

the secondĀ poster use a code. Each letter is a square with a triangle and corresponds to a letter. In this poster, itā€™s written Ā«Vive le FringeĀ».Ā  Itā€™s repeated three times andĀ  it's overlaid with a grid effect. Type is juxtaposed between the squares. It could be interpreted as how art is a coded message generated by different tools and medium, as theatre, music, or circus.
