36 Days of Type — An Animated Collaboration

“36 Days of Type is a project that invites designers, illustrators and graphic artists to express their particular interpretation of letters and numbers of our alphabet”
For this year’s edition, I decided to contact 36 designers and illustrators with the idea of animating a unique letter from each artist. The animations were posted daily on Instagram from April 2 — May 7.

The goal was simple: carry out a worldwide collaboration with 36 artists. However, this turned out to be much more complicated. Not everyone responded to the messages and emails which made it difficult to envision the scope of the work to come. Despite that, everyone that responded was really welcoming and open to the idea of seeing their work animated. In the end, the project was an absolute success, far exceeding my expectations!

I also wanted to challenge myself to try out different animation styles that I don’t usually get a chance to work on. Furthermore, I wanted the alphabet to be packed with as many animation techniques as possible: traditional animation, 3d animation, character animation, 2d animation…

I would like to give a huge thanks to all of the artists that let me animate their work. Thank you for making this project possible!

Behind The Scenes
I started making the behind the scenes for Instagram stories when I posted the letter A. Lots of people sent me messages telling me that they really enjoyed it so I decided to do it for the remaining 35 animations. I'm glad that I decided to continue because now I have this behind the scenes video to show along with the project.
Plan. Everything.
Planning was a huge part of this project. I was contacting so many designers that I had to know things like if I had already sent them a message, when they answered, if they sent the files etc...
Press
I posted the animations everyday on Instagram and on Dribbble from April 2 — May 7. I also posted a daily story on Instagram with the corresponding Behind The Scenes.

I was amazed to see that so many pages were reposting my animations. I was having trouble keeping track of all the mentions.

Instagram growth
The project really blew up once I posted the recap video. It took me 27 days to reach my first 1000 followers, 14 days to reach 2000 and just 5 days to reach 3000.
