Brora Whisky
Re-Brand & Bottle Design
This project is a branding opportunity for Brora distillery which has been closed since 1983. Diageo, a multinational company recently bought the distillery and began renovation of the original building and stills. The distillery is set to relaunch with production resuming in 2020.
Brora, located in the north east of Scotland, has an intriguing heritage, beautiful scenery and a wealth of history. The inspiration behind this limited edition run of whisky emerged from the distinct black trees which surround the original distillery. The trees have turned black due to ethanol vapour which has leaked from whisky casks in the past. I felt like this was an interesting route to take the design as it links the past to the present.
The bottles were designed to be matte black with matte white logos initially, however after multiple tests of the paints I decided to order smaller bottles which were painted white for a limited edition run. This gave the bottles a prestigious quality and a lavish characteristic. The tags add a reputable finish to the bottles with their distinguished laser cut illustrations on thick black stock and rough twine string.
The logo was designed to be clean and contemporary however still convey the traditional aesthetic of the brand. In comparison the geometric trees convey the future ethos of the distillery and take a step in a new direction which will allow them to expand. Although both convey different directions (past and present) of the brand they unite together to create a stunning simplistic visual on the bottles.
Along side the re-brand and bottles, I created a variety of different design elements such as whisky glasses, slate coasters, a box and other advertising materials. The advertising consists of posters, billboards and social advertising all of which can be viewed below.
