The objective of this project is to create a deck of cards and a box for the cards. We were to create a suit for each card, all number cards and face cards. The cards were to have the same back, indistinguishable from the rest and unique faces.

I began thinking about what interested me and did some research to gleam other information. Initially, I wanted to create cards using Dungeons & Dragons as my inspiration. But I was having a hard time incorporating this into my design. Next I thought about geometrics. I enjoy designs that have similar qualities as the original yet in a geometric sense. Where the original design is transformed into something geometrical and so that is what I did.

To make each suit into a different geometric design, I did research and found inspiration from other card designs that were made with geometric shapes. I designed face cards for the king, queen, jack, and ace before I designed the rest of the cards. I am a fan of simplistic designs so i tried to make my cards minimalistic, simple, but pleasing. For the king, queen, and jack I made different crowns or circlet designs for each character. The crowns were placed in the center of the card with a background being either the diamond, spade, heart, and club. I created the letters for these cards out of geometric shapes and transferred the letters to each suit. Next, I decided to forgo the numbers on the number cards and use only the shapes creating the diamond, spade, club, and heart. I took the shape from the face cards and then created all of the number cards. My reasoning behind not placing numbers on the cards was to keep the design more minimalist.

I learned how to make different shapes using the Pathfinder tool. It is easily becoming one of my favorite tools inside of Adobe Illustrator. I learned how to manipulate letters and even create letters out of shapes. I also learned how to manipulate multiple artboards all at once as well as exporting multiple artboards at the same time. The Artboard tool was essential for this project with keeping cards within the same parameters.
