Michigan State Football | Spring Game Social Media Pkg

This spring, I had the opportunity to lead the graphics package and social media content for this year's Green-White Spring Game. This included some promotional graphics ahead of spring practices and the game to build awareness and anticipation. The package for the game was more simple given the augmented nature/rules of the exhibition, but was still treated as a regular game, staying on-brand with content for big plays and end of quarter updates -- I was also able to take photos during pregame that were subsequently used for the graphics. This was a lot of fun to take point on working directly with social media content for our audience. Give them a look below!
Sample of offense/defense impact plays:
Given the unique style of the game and variety of players in on the action, graphics were made for specific players (starters) with generic ones for players who could make plays that aren't usually in (also due to lack of photos). Having the simpler ones made paid off as our younger guys made some big plays during the game.
These were optimized and used specifically for Twitter:
We used both #GoGreen and #GoWhite in each post to keep things consistent and fair between the two sides. To liven things up more, we tweeted simple posts for impact plays using just emojis when there wasn't a graphic to go along with it -- and they did quite well too. Of course, some memes were added in to the mix, and brought in the best engagement of the day:
For the end of quarters and after the game, specific sizes were made for Twitter (8x10), Instagram (8x10), and IG story (wallpaper):
Also made was the logo that ties all of these graphics together:
As for the promos, a different approach was taken using illustrations to let people know of the upcoming game. A mailer version was also made to send to recruits:
We also had members from the basketball team in attendance, including Matt McQuaid and Kenny Goins who served as honorary captains and used that to help promote the game:
As for photos, I was only able to be down on the field for a limited amount of time during pregame before heading back up to the press box to run the social media pages. It was great being down there again and it's always fun to have our players interact with the camera. Here's a sample of some of the top shots:
And thus, a stock photo was born:
Can never go wrong with Zeke the Wonderdog, the goodest of all the boys
To button things up, this was a great opportunity and experience running the social media pages and working in the in-game setting for the first time in this capacity. Although it was just an exhibition, I think we did a solid job taking it seriously (while being fun, of course) and bringing fans content they could enjoy -- especially since the game wasn't televised live per se. Shoutout to my fellow student designer Andrew Kiddle on helping me out with the in-game posting and keeping track of the plays with me. This has certainly been an experience I'll keep with me and look to build off of in the future!
