From ground level the Faroe Islands are breathtaking, but from the air they are other-worldly.
Once in the air I looked out across the islands’ muted tones of greens, blacks and greys. Observing the landscape from this perspective as it stood alone in the middle of the north Atlantic, the mountains looked like colossal limpets emerging from the ocean depths. Cliffs dropped into oblivion right next to contrasting black sand beaches and turquoise waters. Villages sat in the shadows of fjord ridges, while the changeable weather blocked and revealed our view. Seeing the whole archipelago from this amazing viewpoint left us feeling so small, insignificant and awestruck in this wild land of giants.
