Bernico FTX27 - F1 Powerboat



  • Bernico is Belgium's most acclaimed manufacturer of high performance race boats. For over ten years, they are assisted by engineering company Voxdale, who supply Computational Flow Dynamic (CFD) calculations and develop state-of-the-art stepped hull designs. When the latter approached us to help design the deck of World Champion Off-shore racing Buby Bertels, we could not say no.
  • This project is about Bernico Racing International's brand new power boat: the FTX27, predecessor to the F1 Xtreme. As previously mentioned, this boat is tailor made to Off-shore Racing World Champion Buby Bertels. Our work mainly covered the 2D design and 3D development the deck (upper part of the boat). The trademark Bernico stepped hull was designed and developed by the Engineers at Voxdale, in close cooperation with Bernico.

  • PART 01 BASE LINE IDEATION

    The designing process for this project was somewhat different from what we're used to. Work on this boat started a couple of months before it was due to race for the championship. Needless to say, time was of the essence. After some initial quick design sketches to define a general design direction, we set about modelling a base line in 3D straight away. This base line was paramount to the unique way we organised the designing process with Bernico. This workflow worked from both ends: with Voxdale chipping away at the design of the hull, our deck design had to comply with the dimensions of the defined splitline at all times. A fair bit of going back and forth was needed in order to get every requirement right.

  • PART 02 DESIGN DEVELOPMENT WORKFLOW

    As pure-bred racers, the guys at Bernico know what they're doing and what they require in order to build a winning race boat. As designers, it was our job to grasp their world and translate their findings in a design that looked aggressive while being completely "form follows function". Given the limited time frame for development, our workflow ran like a race boat: fast and efficient. Taking Buby Bertels' previous championship winner, the status quo of the 3D base line was thoroughly discussed and compared to its predecessor. Rough ideas and designs were sketched onto screen grabs or on the real-world boats itself. This way, we were able to freeze the final design in a couple of meetings spanning over just two weeks. The base line 3D, which proved vital during the design phase, served as the literal foundation of the production files
