Honour the charge they made' is the third last stanza in Alfred Tennyson's 'The charge of the light Brigade' and became the starting point for my project. The poem is dated back to the Crimean war, and is a tribute to those comrades though in my view it is a poem of remembrance for all war. Contemporaries named this the 'Great War' for a reason and that was because over 59 million troops were mobilised from every corner of the world, over 8 million died and another 29 million injured to alter the political, social, economic and cultural nature of Europe. While reading and researching about the war, I came across a particular soldier through whom l built a strong knowledge of the lives of those on the front line and trenches. From this the project took its biggest turn and became more about the individual experiences of the soldiers. My garment responds to the imagery of the period and draws upon the devastating effects of war such as wounds and amputation. The project's aim is to honour those who made sacrifices during the Great War with a wearable collection and to promote remembrance to commercial clients and the younger generation.
