NORWEGIAN WOOD - HARUKI MURAKAMI
Penguin - Adult Fiction Cover Award

Haruki Murakami’s books and stories have been bestsellers in Japan as well as
internationally. His writing is vivid, dazzling, experimental and imaginative and my
design reflects this.
HARUKI MURAKAMI, NORWEGIAN WOOD
The concept of my cover is simple the two opposite sides of the story which are life and death, which is why the cover is black and white representing the good and the bad.
But it’s much more than that too, the black textured background symbolizes depression in its texture capturing the audience’s attention but, in a way, not taking anything away from the main focus of the cover which is the type. The long black and white text stripes symbolize the woods and more so a specific time which is full moon midnight making the perfect balance between the black and white shadow of the trees and the moonlight shining throw dragging you in. With all its elegance and perfect abstract shapes, you can’t help but feel an unsettling feeling in your stomach because the lines feel like obstacles in your way symbolizing all the daily struggles in the story; basically, showing everything in black and white.
