Morrison Chamber Music Centre

Morrison Chamber Music Center brings world-class musical performances to the halls of San Francisco State University. Performances bring together centuries of musical exploration with modern technologies. The result is a vibrant clash of audio and visual experiences.

Morrison sits in a difficult cross path. It was created for the students of SF State University, who are (mostly) young, and passion for chamber and classical music is not exactly trending. However, Morrison concerts bring in older crowds from outside the university who have kept the organisation running through participation and donations.

Morrison Chamber Music Center has decided to run events that merge traditional sounds with modern technologies, create events that will interest a broader range of people, and move away from traditional performances where the musician play and the audience sits and listens.

The change in structure has inspired a re-brand that reflects its new way of presenting music to the world.
This project was a challenge as the visual representation of music is steeped in stereotypes and symbols that I wanted to avoid. Additionally, reflecting the new tone of the organisation while avoiding alienating the older demographic who have traditionally been loyal to the organisation was an interesting balance. The result was a visual reimagining of  a recognisable oil painted portrait of Vivaldi.

A flexible logo was developed in three different ratios for various contexts that worked in black, as a clipping mask, and with imagery.
