ATOM AMP / JDS LABS

Conceived as the next-generation replacement to Objective2, Atom Amp builds on more than a decade of amplifier design evolution at JDS Labs. JDS Labs have streamlined the amp to include everything their customers had requested without additional configuration or cost. This was also one of the biggest design challenges during the project. Atom Amp comes fully loaded with a smooth 1/4" headphone jack, gold-plated preamp RCA outputs, and both 3.5mm and RCA inputs. More power. No noise.

Atom consolidates the need for a separate amp and pre-amp. Connect up to two sources and select between 3.5mm and RCA input with the push of a button. All the interaction buttons including the volume knob are laid out on the front while the power and RCA inputs are tucked away on the back.

DEVELOPMENT OF THE ATOM

Being injection molded, Atom Amp weighs about 9 ounces. Internal weights in the corners add better balance to the chassis. Atom also has no visible screw holes and features a raised front for better access to the volume knob. To push performance to the next level, Atom Amp’s AC rectification stage is physically isolated from its amplifier stage at the PCB level, like two boards in one.

The design process started with sketching and conceptualizing the next generation budget amp. Once a direction was defined, multiple 3D prints were done to evaluate the structural sanity of the amp. Thanks to the simplistic details and form, after a quick round of manufacturing checks, the atom was sent for production. The whole process from industrial design to production took less than a year.
