The North Carolina Science Olympiad Mission Possible

An accomplished student at Central Piedmont Community College, Seth Vitco builds upon his cum laude liberal arts studies at Greyfriars Classical Academy. In high school, Seth Vitco placed highly in several events at the 2013 North Carolina Science Olympiad Regional Finals, and he finished first in the Rube Goldberg competition.

With a guiding mission of attracting K-12 students to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) studies and careers, the North Carolina Science Olympiad (NCSO) hosts a series of annual tournaments on the campuses of various North Carolina educational institutions.

NCSO’s Mission Possible event requires participants to design and construct a Rube Goldberg-type machine that is set in motion by inserting a table tennis ball. The ball triggers a series of kinetic activities that end with the raising of a small square platform.

Participants earn points on all intervening action sequences/transfers of energy. Mission Possible enjoys the sponsorship of the aerospace and defense conglomerate Lockheed Martin.
