2019 Idaho.gov Redesign
The redesigned Idaho.gov was launched on 1/3/19. The main goals of the redesign were to de-clutter and modernize the overall design while making speed improvements and reducing overall maintenance. Heat maps, user testing, and analytic data were used to determine areas to improve upon and eliminate to improve the overall user experience.
Heatmaps provided through Hot Jar were used on the old Idaho.gov to determine where users clicked, scrolled, and what they were not using.

Key takeaways from the homepage heatmaps:

1. Many users utilized the large search box on all devices. We decided that it was important to keep the search a main focus on the new homepage design.

2. Not many users clicked on the text links within the 9 card categories on the homepage outside of the Jobs card. We re-organized the content presented on the homepage based on popularity.

3. On a cell phone, the old website footer was very long and not many users scrolled all of the way down or clicked on many items in the long footer. We optimized the new footer for our cell phone users.

4. Very few users clicked or tapped on the links in the last (right) column of the footer (Alerts & Social media). These links were removed or modified.

5. Users clicked/tapped on the 3 links in the top black bar (Online Services, Contact, and A-Z Directory) frequently. We decided to keep these in a similar spot on the new design.

6. Few users clicked/tappped on the Idaho.gov Twitter feed on the homepage. The feed was removed from the new homepage design.

Key takeaways from the interior page heatmaps:

1. There was extra text that could be removed because users click on the larger link and the smaller informational text was unnecessary. The headlines are explanatory enough.

2. On a cell phone, the old website footer is very long and not many users scroll all of the way down or click on many items in the long footer. We optimized the footer for our cell phone users. (Same as we learned from the homepage heatmap).

3. The “Popular Items” links were not frequently clicked on. It was decided they could be removed or reviewed to see if they were still relevant or if there were more relevant links that should be included here instead.

4. Not many users clicked on the “How are we doing?” Survey link at the bottom of all interior pages. This survey was moved to the contact page.
Google Analytics, User Testing, and Google PageSpeed Insights were used to determine other areas for improvement.

Key takeaways:

1.   On the old Idaho.gov there were individual agency pages that contained contact infor and the link to that individual agency's website. These pages were not frequently visited and were a maintenance issue as information could easily become outdated. To help reduce clicks and maintenance we decided to link directly to the agency’s website on the A-Z Directory Page.

2.   The old version of Idaho.gov scored low on the Google PageSpeed Insight test. We optimized, and reduced bloat to improve the speed scores for both desktop and mobile.

3.   Improve overall user experience. We reduced the visual clutter and the number of clicks a user had to make to find what they were looking for. We kept the search prominent, added filters to the search to help the user find what they needed faster and more efficiently, and added a consistent navigation bar to all pages.
