BACHELOR THESIS PROJECT
Making Image Composition Work
In my bachelor thesis I was focused on art fundamentals and learning how to compose an image most pleasing for the eye. My project was divided into two parts. A theoretical part with the title "Make image composition work" and a practical part where I illustrated a book with the title "Annie the dark child: Beginnings."

I first started to define research my research question that I wanted to answer. It was hard but I finally had my question: "How has a visual presentation need to be designed to fairly meet the story of a fictitous character"

I was looking for ways to make art stand out from the crowd and wanted to know tipps and tricks from artists and photographers. Themes I covered where the Golden Ratio, the rule of thirds, focal points, symmetry and contrast. I also took a digression to Disney and how they coped with a three dimensional effects in their earlier projects. And I digged a little deeper into color theory as well, so I would know the principles on how I could combine colors that fit.

After I read a lot about art fundamentals and knew what I had to think about when creating an illustrated book. I then started to plan it.

The book is based on the story of the fictional character "Annie", who was created for the game "League of Legends" by Riot Games. She is one of the characters you can play with. Riot Games made a huge cinematic trailer about Annies earlier life, which blew my mind. So I decided to bring Annie to life in my 2nd part of my bachelor thesis.

I planned how I could cut the story to meet my needs and started to draw the characters and to create a color scheme. I then started to create a story board, so I can get an overview on how the illustration could look like next to each other. In every step I took I tried to implement the previous learned art fundamentals.
The major task then was to draw all the pages. I had lots of fun doing it and learned along the way. I chose to draw everything on my iPad via Procreate. It took me around 1-3 days for one image from start to finish. Often times Procreate had limited tools so I mostly switched between Procreate and Photoshop. Here you can see how the process mostly looked like.
