The Geometry of Living - Towers

Drawing

(etching and aquatint on zinc)

My ambition is not simply to build architecturally, but to build socialistically as well.” [Berthold Lubetkin, architect, who designed Cranbrook Estate]

The Geometry of Living series, inspired initially by the Cranbrook Estate in Bethnal Green, London (but as well many others), contemplate functionality of the modern estate architecture. It is a reflection on the relatively rapid transformation of modernist housing architecture - from grand social ideology and middle class dream housing in the sixties into, only half a century later, council estates populated by the poorest fraction of society, which very often become crime and drug hotspots.
