PROJECT BRIEF:
Time: 3 Weeks | Work Force: 1 Designer
Role: Research, Ideation, Fabrication, Graphics
GOAL:
An investigation of the Wedge Line car era's aesthetic and form and the translation of the wedge line design language into the familiar product of a desk lamp.
CAR ERA:
Wedge Line
The Pininfarina Ferrari Modulo was my main inspiration for this project and one of the most unique and definitve cars of the era.
• Wedge Line cars are built wide and low with an arrow shaped body that is meant to suggst aerodynamics and wind resistance.
PRODUCT INSPIRATION:
The Wedge Line era stands as the first radical break from the traditional automobile deigns of the past. This era gave birth to the first super car and pioneered many great car concepts and design elements.
•Many of the cars feature folding headlights and bodies made almost entirely of flat, trapezoidal panels.
IDEATION SKETCHES:
The form emphasizes the wedge-positive profile and sharp angels of the car's design language.
SKETCH MODELS:
The form selected is built around a single, subtle curve that is connected by a wedge-shaped base and head.
FABRICATION PROCESS:
After solidifying the look of the desk lamp I then gathered material and began the process of building the model. For this model I used high-density prototyping foam, aluminum, urethane plastic, paint, and led lights.
FINAL MODELS:
The Wedge Line Lamp is a successful, fully functioning prototype based on the re-interpretation of the Wedge Line car era's design language.
• The lamp head is attached to the neck on a pivot so that the head can move up and down and back and forth.
The lamp is built wide and low to play with the mass and frailty of the overall form. The glossy finish and the white and red paint job accentuate the clean, fluid edges and add a dynamic elegance to the entire form.
