I wanted to create icons for the Harry Potter series that were unique from other icon sets. Almost every Harry Potter set is either line art or silhouettes. I wanted to create these so that fans of the series could use them as stickers physically or digitally and also so I could practice some of my illustrator skills I recently learned.
I started out by making a list of anything from Harry Potter that could potentially become an icon. I wanted to get the ideas on paper so I could start to visualize them. I did rough sketches of the different ideas I had.
Sketching is so important when it comes to content creation. There is a big difference between seeing something in your head and being able to execute it accurately.
These icons went through a few different iterations.
My initial idea was to have a simple highlight color along the left side. I liked it but they felt incomplete. It felt too similar to a lot of other icon sets I looked at.
I decided to color them fully but have white space to act as a highlight to hopefully make them feel finished. I liked this more, but they still felt too simple and basic.
I finally settled on a design that was consistent and complete. I really love how these turned out.
This is my first icon set I've made and it taught me a lot about what it takes to get a polished piece of art, let alone a whole set.
