VOLUBI LAMP //
Brief
The goal of the three-month long university project was to design an interior lamp using LED technology. I also had to build a prototype that can demonstrate the functionality of the final design. My idea was to combine the three main types of interior lighting – ambient, accent and task – in a modular lighting system, so it can be used in a wide variety of places and situations.
Inspiration
In terms of aesthetics, I drew inspiration from the look of minimalist, soft interiors, particularly from modern offices and homes. I tried to avoid detailed, hardcore contours – my main objective was giving shape to light itself.
Process
I researched the technology behind LED lamps, and came to the conclusion it is reasonable to integrate several general functions into one product. I developed a shape which is capable of holding several LED-strips in a moderate way.
Concept
Volubi is an interior lamp which enables the simultaneous usage of decor lights, diffused lights and working lights. Its capsule-shaped modules include their own bright LED-strips, so they can be used as lamps on their own. Threaded on the axle, you can also achieve numerous hybrid light effects.

Users can rotate, stabilize, dim or brighten the modules according to their needs. For instance, if we need lighting suitable for office work, but would also like to pleasantly illuminate the other parts of the room, it is enough to rotate only two of the modules towards the desk, while using the remaining modules to create smooth, diffused lighting. Due to the precise design, we can accurately control the direction and brightness of the illumination.
I developed alternate versions (like the vertical and wall mounted ones you can see here), but I abandoned them.
Prototype
Before building the proof of concept prototype, I made mockups and models of cardboard to get a sense of shape of the lamp. I realized that PVC tubes will form the base of the modules. After I sawed and polished them to get an accurate size, I cut grooves capable of holding aluminum LED profiles. I also sawed and polished an aluminum tube that works like an axle. I used a lathe and a laser cutting machine to create the rotating disks that work like primitive bearings. Before cutting, soldering and integrating the LED-strips, I glued and painted these parts.
The prototype was showcased on the famous Furniture & Light Fair Exhibition within the framework of the Stockholm Design Week. It was also selected among the finalists of the 5th ArtHungry Awards.
