As a final project for my Foundations of Drawing class, I was asked to recreate a drawing by a famous artist. I chose Käthe Kollwitz because, like a designer, she paid attention to more than what she was making. Kollwitz cared about representing emotion, and her art has more of a purpose than mere self-indulgence. I found recreating someone else’s work was much like attempting to copy someone’s signature; you can get close, but it is still never exactly the same. I chose her piece, Mother and Child, because it reminded me of my own mother. I think this is why Kollwitz created art in the first place — to cause others to reminisce about their own lives and experiences.
