Drunken Master: Sound Re-Design

Drunken Master Sound Re-Design
Sound is a very important aspect in a movie. It enhances the visual experience by emerging the audience in a sound scape that syncs up to the visuals on screen. It is a powerful tool as it can be used to persuade the audience to feel a certain way, to sympathise with the protagonist or to know if someone is the bad buy  such as the “Empire’s March” for Darth Vader.
I have explored the sound design and sound mixing of a modern fight scene and use that knowledge to create a new modern cinematic sound design on an old Kung Fu movie. The scene that I have chosen to work on is a fight scene from the movie Drunken Master (1978). With its limitation of technology at the time the sounds are low quality and didn't deliver the punch it needed to make it sound impactful. On the other hand this paved the way for modern cinema as sound technology gets better it allowed for more creativity with sound design.
Before (Original Sound Design)
After (Sound Re-Design)
A reference that I used to compare my work with is a fight scene from The Matrix, a fight between the protagonist Neo and the antagonist Mr. Smith. The is a good comparison because it both shows two main character matched up in a close combat situation with mid to close types of shots, therefore this allows me to work on the sound precisely as possible. The main difference between the fight scenes back then and now is that modern cinema has more range in sound, microphone are able to pick up more detail in a sound of a single punch and then playing it out of a good enough speaker will allow it to be convincing enough to sound like a punch. Thus for example in The Matrix they were able to use much deeper punched creating a much impactful sound that will resonate with the audience much clearer.
