Neotraditional 'Hannya & Bullsnake' Design

"The Hannya (般若) mask is a mask used in Noh theater, representing a jealous female demon. It possesses two sharp bull-like horns, metallic eyes, and a leering mouth."

This piece was sketched out during my study on Japanese art, particularly japanese neotraditional tattoo-style, for a painting which i intend to do when time allows me. As with all my drawings for the portfolio, i tried to put my own spin on it. I had seen a few of my peers use the hannya masks in various japanese-inspired neotraditonal pieces and often include snakes, however i had never seen the skeleton of a snake - i figured this is what i could do to set me apart. I used a 'bullsnake' as reference (as a vague homage to the 'bull-like horns' of the traditional hannya) and made the creative decision to elongate it's tongue to weave through the chrysanthemum petals. The swirly background is common in traditional  japanese art.
