Natural gas is now the most important energy source in Hungary. In meeting the winter peak demand, and in establishing and maintaining the security of gas supply, underground storage sites play a major role. On any colder winter day, most of the country’s gas supply comes from these facilities.
Gas storage sites are established in porous reservoir formations and they are all transformed from depleted natural gas reservoirs. These facilities provide huge storage capacities, which are especially suitable for meeting and balancing volatile seasonal demands.
During the injection period, gas is transported to the storage site, where it is measured and compressed. Since pressure increase also raises the temperature of the gas, it must be cooled down. Following this, it travels through the flow line manifold and the fieldlines, and then the gas is injected into the storage layer through the injection wells.
