TYPOGRAPHIC VOICES - For this project we were given a typeface to research and make a poster about. The typeface I was given was Trajan. Trajan is a serif typeface designed in 1989 by Carol Twombly. The design of the typeface was highly inspired by the letterforms of Roman Capitals taken from the inscription at the base of Trajan’s Column, this is where the typeface’s name comes from. Trajan is an all capitals typeface, again taken as inspiration from the Romans.
Initially I decided to focus on the letter 'V' to start off the project, being a Roman numeral too I thought it was fitting for my typeface. I did multiple experimental designs with the letter and resulted in using an experimental hand rendered piece created with outlines of the letter 'V' drawn through the solid letter shape.
The typeface characteristics are legible and formal, it’s an old fashioned, yet elegant typeface used to create that vintage and dated feel to mainly books, wine bottles, magazines and posters. Trajan is well known and recognised for appearing on posters promoting movies.
Carol Twombly originally created this typeface for Abobe where the font family is Trajan Regular and Bold. Since this there is now a more modern version of Trajan called Trajan Pro 3, this front family includes 6 varieties of font.
For my final poster, I broke down the letterforms individually as to how they were drawn and carved into Trajan's Column originally, this shows the typefaces characteristics and almost gives more of a background to the letterforms.
