Visual analyses of the book The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle

The task of the project is to apply three methods of visual analysis to selected visual material.
Formal analysis - to visual the physical elements of image.
Context analysis - to visual the circumstances of event, idea or content.
Abstract analysis - to visual the image in abstract way.

I chose Haruki Murakami's book "The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle" and its context as my project object.
When the book was released (1995) the uniformity and homogeneity were taken the main position in Japan.
However, the book is totally an opposition of that time circumstances. It supports the uniqueness and variation which is represented by interesting characters with various lifestyles in the book.

According to this investigation of book, I made the visual analysis assuming the unique characters as the reference point.

For formal analysis I created the movie of the book. I marked the main characters with different colors that it could be identified.
It shows when and which characters appear in the book, how different characters interact between each other. The movie is like the screening of book in the other way. The book in 1 minute.

The formal analysis
I investigated that the story teller, the space and the time are changing very often in the book narrative.
Because of that, for context analysis I created the map of the book where I divided these three changing objects and marked in the map.
One rectangle represents one page of the book. This visualization can help the reader to understand the book and investigate the depth of the book.

The context analysis
For the third analysis (abstract) I created an interactive program. The visualization is made from the sticks which represents the search line in the slider on the web page.
I selected the main words which represent the main character - Toru Okada. Then I searched these words in the ebook and screenshot the slider of the found words.
The left side is the start of the book, the right side is the end of the book. When you mouse over on stick the sentence with the word which describes the character shows up in the bottom of program. The word which represents the character is bold.
There is a screenshot of the created program.
