Speculative Realism Exhibition Project

Brief: This project asked us to map a speculative journey. The goal of this project was to ask “What if?” through the use of form and material and to use graphic design as an ideological form of inquiry.
Narrative:

It is 3018. Evolution is now “self-conscious”

We are at the dawn of a new age in human history, where the law is not the survival of the fittest. In this era, the natural human nervous system capabilities have been augmented by evolution to help us see the build-up of the negative emotions by the change in the color of their eyes. There is no manual will to change this. Evolution made this leap from being generative to intuitive, where it uses the emotional information stored in us and synthesized biology to come up with a solution, which gave our eyes changing colors for different negative emotions we felt.

If this is the future of the homo sapiens:

- How does it affect our moral compass?
- Would we be inclined to take advantage of other’s vulnerabilities?
- Would we be able accept other people’s emotions if they could see ours?
- How would this change shape us as a collective?

In order to give context and meaning to the interaction, I created three pairs of eye-glasses with three colors of transparent colorful irises. The set-up was on a pedestal set up with a two-way mirror. The reason of having a two-way mirror was to push upon the idea that you are seen as you see. With two people taking turns to put on the glasses, they could view the change in the color of the iris in themselves as well as the other person, putting forth the idea of the difficulty in being morally good.
