Dazzle

Dazzle
Dazzle is a research project we have been working on focusing on the use of optical illusion in everyday objects. We developed a set of ping pong rackets which use visual patterns to irritate the opposing ping pong player.

Challenge: To develop a set of irritating ping pong rackets.

Solution: We conducted some research into different forms of optical illusions and how they can be incorporated into the physical form of a ping pong racket. Our final prototype is made using a 3D printer and has a white leather surface. One side is kept without a pattern while the second one shows an optical illusion which seems to move when the player looks at it. We used a laser cutter to produce the surface cover and etch the pattern into it.
We investigated how different optical illusions could be included into the surface design of the ping pong rackets.
The pattern was etched into the white leather using a
laser cutter.
