In a group of four, we were asked to design an intervention to a selected parvis, for being in front of the Church Sainte-Cécile. After analysing the neighbor-borough of Villeray where the Church Sainte-Cécile is located, our team concluded our design concept to be that of an elevated musical platform. Considering that there are a few musical performances that happen, throughout the summer, on the flight of stairs right in front of the church, and that Sainte Cecile is the patroness of all musicians, it seemed adequate.

It is structure that is casual and playful. People can find a spot in the structure to sit down or lean on to watch the performance for a while; and children can explore this “giant toy” and running around on it.

The metal posts support a continuous 3-meter-wide wooden path that elevated to various height and the highest point will be around 2.5 meters. The lower part of the structure also makes sound when people interact with it. Strings set linearly in a row between some of the posts, attached from the elevated structure to the ground. It is an analogy of the harp; an instrument often associated with Saint-Cecile.So, it is an adaptable platform for people to stay for a longer period when there are activities and a place that people in the neighborhood can temporarily withdraw themselves from the street when they are looking for a place to retreat.
During the winter, our main circular structure would become possibly a snow slide where children and adults can come with their crazy carpets and slide off the end of the path. They would walk up from the right side of the structure and slide down on the left ramp near the sidewalk where it is safer to land.

Two metro stops away from Beaubien Cinema, the only neighbourhood cinema in Montreal, our intervention tries to inherent some of these cultural characteristics and bring it to the nearby neighbourhood of the church as an exterior “cinepark”. During summer nights, movies from different countries and videos by local arts will be played there. It will be a culture center in the neighbourhood where performance, music, movie will constantly take place.
