A Scream of Freedom (Christo & Jeanne-Claude)

A Scream of Freedom is an editorial design about Christo & Jeanne-Claude’s artistic work that converts into the story it tells; The project aims to make a continuous game and reflection about the authenticity crisis of postmodernity (copy vs original, representation vs reality, etc.) in a similar way that the artists refer to when commenting on their projects: (1)  “When we do a project like the Pont-Neuf, it’s not a project about the Pont-Neuf, it is the Pont-Neuf, the real Pont-Neuf...”  (2) “The works are real things. No amount of virtual reality, no photography, nothing can replace the real things.” Following from this idea the publication could be understood as the work of art and the reader (at least for a while) as the artist. On the last page the reader is encouraged to undo the binding and use it to wrap the different coloured double pages, enabling them to start reshaping the real world; As Christo & Jeanne-Claude’s would say: “Borrow public space and make gentle disturbance for a few days”. In this way the publication and art itself is accessible to all “It will belong to everyone until it’s gone.”  and is broken free due to its temporality, in the same way that happens with the artists’ projects; ”...the project cannot stay, because freedom is the enemy of possession and possession is equal to permanence”.
