South Bend, Indiana

The land of South Bend was discovered on December 1679 by French explorer who landed on the banks of the St. Joseph River. Until 1820, when the European settlements transformed the area into a trading post. In 1842, the University of Notre Dame were founded. By the second half of the 19th Century, South Bend’s growth was marked by rapid industrial expansion. Railroads were built, street car lines were developed, and an extensive commuter line had been established. South Bend had grown to be Indiana’s fourth largest city.

Unfortunately after World War II, the city’s growth suffered and the city’s economy slowly started to decline. South Bend’s location is one of its strengths that bring in a lot of revenue to the city. Cities of the past were built right next to rivers because it provided water for food, transportation, and business. South Bend is also located in between Chicago and Detroit, two major cities in the U.S. The other major strength for the city is the University of Notre Dame. The football team gives South Bend a sense of community and the whole city is a family that supports the school.

The University of Notre Dame is also a weakness for South Bend, it brings in lots of students and gives the city a commonality. The school provides the most jobs and everything about the city revolves around it. South Bend lacks in giving people other forms of entertainment and work. Our goal is to shine light on the other aspects of South Bend that are unique as well.
