Deployable House

PROJECT DATE: Winter 2010

OBJECTIVE: The main goal of the project was to design a habitable stucture that utilized the concept of deployment in order to house a maximum amount of functions in a minimized building foot print.

In order to incorporate a sense of context, we were to create narratives which drove our design. My narrative is based on middle eastern vernacular architecture.

The basis for my design is derived from 2 standard shipping containers each measuring 20'-0" x 8'-0" x 8'-0". Using a variety of deployment techniques, these two containers morph into a multi-storied residential house with an interior courtyard. The design elements of the courtyard and geometrically patterened screens reinforce the vernacular building elements.

As a bonus, I approached this project from a "marketer" stand point creating different geometric patterns that "consumers" could pick from for a sense of personalization.

The animations below show the deployment techniques in action, for the overall building as well as the interior functions of the building.

Scenario 1: Ideal for larger gatherings. Dining/kitchen elements reduced in order to provide for maximum living space.
Scenario 2: Space divided to provide equal living and kitchen space.
Scenario 3: Open floor plan option with deployed dining table and open L-shaped kitchen.
Scenario 5: Wider living room seating area with open L-shaped kitchen.
