Mark-making exercises are a great way to get the mind going and the blood flowing. Often times after work I'll sit down with my brush pen and make scribbles or write out words in different ways.
These worksheets are informal, a place to experiment brush techniques or just play around with lettering.

Most of the times I throw all these worksheets in the trash can thinking about them as scraps but, as Pierre di Sciullo says, a sketch can "sometimes be viewed for itself, not like a former step of something else" (Steven Heller and Lita Talaric, Typography Sketchbooks, Princeton Architectural Press, 2011)

So, the last time I cleaned my room I had to empty the paper basket and while I was tidying up the room, I was struck by the expressive quality of letters and words I scribbled over that worksheets and visualized those sheets as posters. Treasures found in other "trash".
