The Hunger Games
Katniss Everdeen lives in the poverty ridden
District 12 of what used to be North America.
There are 12 districts and the capitol, Panem,
which means Bread in Latin. The people of
Panem live in abundance. Every few years they
host an event that they call The Hunger Games.
They choose two people out of each district to
fight till death in an arena.
Katniss has lived fighting for food her entire
life. Illegally hunting, bartering and begging
for food. At one point in her life she was close
to starvation and a boy named Peeta offered
her kindness and gave her bread. Peeta, whose
name makes us think of pita bread, was a baker.
As fate would have It The two of them are
chosen from their districts to fight in The
Hunger Games. They fall in love on their
journey to the arena and fight for each other’s lives.

Bread is a symbol throughout the book of high value and abundance. It is special and in many cases is a symbol for kindness and friendship. It also acts to separate those who live in the Capitol from the Districts. Throughout the book there are feelings of hate and love with bread. The negative feelings of seeing the people of Panem have and waste bread. The feeling of love when talking about Peeta’s sacrifice and kindness towards Katniss. These are all reasons why I chose bread as the symbolic photograph for the cover of this book.
