For my first-year experience intersection project, I experimented with plywood in the materials lab for the first time. In the beginning stages of the project, I was asked to explore intersections, and also the properties of the material that we were assigned. During my material tests, I made a simple hinge and decided to expand on it for my final two pieces. In the piece that is featured the pictures above, I used one hinge to interlock seven pieces. In the piece that is shown in the pictures below, I used a system of hinges to create a more complex form. Both pieces utilize intersection through interlocking, while the wooden dowels in the hinges also literally intersect the panels of plywood. I explored the beautiful grain of the plywood by sanding down the panels far enough to expose the hidden patterns that the wood had to offer.
