DZEN: festival between sound and shape

DZEN is a series of electronic music events, organized by Rambalkoshe in Yerevan, Armenia. The concept of the event is built around linking music and visual arts together.
DZEN 0.1
Viken Arman and Goldcap - two of the most famous Armenian DJs out there - have rarely played together in general, and have never played together in Armenia. Rambalkoshe decided to fill that gap and invited everyone on September 29th of 2018 to 91 Teryan street, to an abandoned printing house, for a 9-hour music event set to also be joined by Almo. At the same time, Davit Yukhanyan's solo exhibition was there to take the guests to a whole different world of extraordinary characters. In short, the attendants were finding themselves somewhere between sound and image, trying to see the former and listen to the latter.
The lineup
The event started with a special 1-hour classical music set by Viken Arman, during which, the place had the time to get full, and the attendants had the time to see the exhibition in the predisposed atmosphere.
Davit Yukhanyan's solo exhibition
Architect and illustrator Davit Yyukhanyan creates with a technical black pen on a 70 x 100 cm paper, detailed illustrations that depict the artist’s world and the one we live in, in a surrealist way. The drawings consist of different pieces in the form of small sketches that make part of a bigger one, coming together in one deeply rich image.
The concept behind the pieces is that of an illustration made of illustrations, referencing our material world that consists of different pieces that when put together, complete our reality.
DZEN 0.2
Armen Miran and Patrick Khach are perhaps the only musicians with whom we’d be thrilled to arrange a second DZEN. This time, rugs by Megerian Carpets were all over the space, with the pattern enhancing the poster taken from one of those rugs. Along with the rugs, another exhibition was there for the guests, with posters created during the two years since Rambalkoshe was established for/by/with Rambalkoshe, including works of 12 artists.
The lineup
This time, the event started with a special 30-minutes live performance by Hayk Karoyi Karapetyan, followed by DJ sets by Patrik Khach, Armen Miran, and Serjo b2b Almo.
The exhibition
Rambalkoshe, being also a modern art museum, and from time to time working with wonderful artists in scopes of different projects, is endlessly proud for finally presenting the works of all of those artists in a unite exhibition at DZEN 0.2.
DZEN 0.3
If you thought you have seen one of those all-seen-and-heard moments at the first or second Dzen events, here is the truth: we thought so too until lately. Stop what you are doing for a minute and try to imagine what happened at DZEN 0.3: Sainte Vie (live), Billy Caso (live), Vahagn Hayrapetyan (live), ALMO, and a completely new exhibition by Kupikazu. We had gone to great lengths to make that spring as unforgettable as possible.
The lineup
DZEN 0.3 started with a special live set by Vahagn Hayrapetyan, perhaps one of the most well-known Armenian jazz pianists and composers. Billy Caso was the first to start the night after Vahagn’s set, followed by a live set by Sainte Vie, and ALMO till the sun raised.
?! New exhibition by KUPIKAZU
A completely new exhibition was presented during the event in the second hall of the venue with more than 200 new exhibits presented. Again, the happening was blending the guests somewhere between sound and shape.
DZEN 0.4
It’s a big question of who had been waiting for the fourth edition of DZEN more: people, who would ask every so often when we were throwing the next DZEN and whom we were going to invite; the artists whom we managed to bring together and book after lengthy negotiations; or we, who have been working on this event for months on end to try to make the day unforgettable and full of different emotions. Anyway, this finally happened on September 28th.
The lineup
Milo Häfliger and Bonjour Ben were headlining the event, two musicians that need no introduction, and are much-anticipated in Armenia. The guys were be joined on stage by Almo, Mimi and Vahan, all from Rambalkoshe.
The venue
The venues this time was a huge soviet-time movie making studio, Hayfilm, built in 1920s., situated right on the border of Yerevan.
The exhibition
The exhibition of the fourth DZEN was showcasing photos by Karo Sahakyan, taken in the most hidden corners of our country. Let us assure you that none of you had seen Armenia the way you could see it there. The exhibition was set up right next to the dancing area of the venue, in a long corridor, where people could walk, watch the exhibits, socialize, and, at the same time, not feel cut off from the happening, as the music could also be heard in the exhibition area.
DZEN 0.5
The 5th DZEN took place on February 29 2020. Such would happen in four years, while such Saturday would only come in 28 years after the event. We met in winter and danced till spring.
We had done everything to make DZEN as memorable as possible. Music - Miyagi and Krink from Germany, Budakid from the Netherlands, and while Ascetix from Yerevan to open the event with a special live act. The Main Art Gallery took over the traditional exhibition to display printed works created by modern Armenian artists. The entire get-together took place at The Sports and Concerts Complex after K. Demirdchian in a hall specifically transformed for that day.
The visual part at DZEN 0.5 was presented by The Main Art Gallery and this was the first time these artists gathered in one place: Ani Arakelian (Kupikazu), Anna Hakopian (Coot), Areg Movsisyan (Kupikazu), Armine Shahbazyan (Coot), Davit Yukhanyan, David Margaryan, David Khodjamiryan (Kabashka), Harutyun Tumaghyan (Coot), Kristina Sarkisyan (Unamoric), Khoren Matevosyan (Kupikazu), Lilit Altunyan (Coot), Nona Isajanyan, Sargis Antonyan, Suren Sargsyan, Siranush Danielyan (Kolektiv Design Room), Tigran Artenyan (Kolektiv Design Room), William Karapetyan (Zeal Room), Yeba Muradyan.
