AA Visiting School Melbourne : Virtual Matter (Leaning)

Through the unit we explore the shifting value systems concerning the perception of materials as architecture gradually becomes virtual. We explore the haptic and visual perception of materials through mixed and location-based virtual reality. The triggering of these two sensory channels and the potential
conflict between them opens up for novel, surreal experiences that rely heavily on our knowledge of the physical world and the expectations we form
around it. The group worked particularly on affording leaning.
The built architectural world is abstracted into a minimal haptic properties while the experience is expanded through the virtually built environment. The conflicting expectation give way to an interesting and new virtual matters.
From the study, we found that to afford leaning the environment should have several important features, such as anchoring point and secondary support. The anchoring point should be steady and its surface will affect the user expectation about what familiar feeling they are about to experience next. Another parameter is secondary support, its angle and height will affect how people afford leaning.
