Xueli is an incredible teenager born visually impaired and with Albinism, an inherited genetic condition that reduces the amount of melanin pigment formed in the skin, hair and eyes.

Spending time with Xueli allowed us to capture the many facets of her personality. We aimed to pull her away from an identity defined purely by aesthetics, and reveal the dynamism of her inner conflicts.

We photographed Xueli in a cool, almost surreal and isolated environment. The contrast of her bright, white hair against the background added a sense of fantasy.

The lighting was kept low and 'barely there' as Xueli's vision is sensitive, but this also added to the mood and tone of the images.

We talked to Xueli as we photographed, always keeping her engaged and capturing the raw elements of her expression.
