New Orleans Pelicans pre-game is a mix of hand-painted typography and digital tools to create gritty animations that played pre-game before the teams home crowd. The struggle in these animations were finding the balance of how to take hand-painted type and bring it to life in a way that felt tangible - the idea was for it to feel as if it were painted on, without seeing the brushes. The solution was to paint the type and other designs by hand, scan them in and then to create a tool-kit of individually unique brush strokes that would animate along different paths to reveal the type and other designs.
Of course, directing one of the best NBA All-Stars in Anthony Davis is always a plus.
