Crucible compare and contrast essay

Many comparisons can be made between unlikely characters in the Crucible. Reverend Hale and Reverend Parris, Abigail Williams and Elizabeth Proctor are two sets of these unlikely characters.Reverend Hale and Reverend Parris can surprisingly be compared and easily contrasted. Abigail Williams and Elizabeth Proctor can be contrasted withoutdifficulty but also can be compared.Abigail and Elizabeth differ in their attitudes toward religion and are alike in their love for John. Reverend Hale and Reverend Parris are alike in occupation and their attitudes towards witchcraft atfirst, but are unalike in the way they value a human`s life.      Reverend Parris and Reverend Hale seem to be polar opposites atfirst glance, although they do have a few similarities. For example, they are both priests. They also both believed there was witchcraft in the town at the beginning of the story. This is proven when Hale accuses Tituba of witchcraft and Parris says, "You will confess yourself or I will take you out and whip you to your death, Tituba." (Miller, 44). While they are a few similarities there are a lot of differences. Parris`s reason for priesthood is money, while Hale does it because he is a man of God. 
Reverend Hale also wants to stop the executions with good intentions, while Parris wants to stop them to save his life. Parris says, "You cannot hang this sort. There is danger for me." (Miller, 18). Hale explains his reason for trying to stop the executions by saying this, "Life is God`s most precious gift; no principle, however glorious can justify the taking of it." (Miller, 12).
 As can be seen, there are few comparisons between these two, but many contrasts. The same holds true for Abigail and Elizabeth.
