For this brief, my copywriter and I were required to create a typographical book rewriting a woman into history. The aim was to celebrate the life of a woman who has previously gone unrecognized for her role in the worlds of art, music, science, industry, technology, or any aspect of our culture that we deemed worthy. With no specific target market, our aim was to provide a well-rounded educational book that goes beyond the prescribed dogma of the patriarchal society. We chose to rewrite Louise “Lizzy” Lind af Hageby into histroy, a woman who started the fight for animal rights and anti-vivisection in 1910. This is where our concept was born: The Fight for the Voiceless. Lizzy devoted her life to speaking for those who could not. (ie: animals) I used a bright red, white and black colour scheme, to evoke the thought of blood, passion and severity in the viewer’s mind. I created hand-drawn illustrations of animals that were often tested on, including cats, rats and bunnies. These illustrations are antique-looking, resembling the style of drawings during Lizzy’s life. I had the Lizzy’s timeline. The layout is simple and clean, allowing for the story and illustrations to be the focal point. This typographic brief required the use of carefully crafted guides to ensure professionalism for the typography. The book is easy to follow, informative and visually stimulating.
