Project Brief

For the examination project you are required to design a plastic injection moulded bicycle bottle cage. The bicycle bottle cage is to be designed in a contemporary style appropriate to your selected bicycle brand and the design must encourage the user to interact with the product in the correct manner (i.e. it must be semantically correct). The bottle cage must be designed to accommodate the standard fixture points found on either the diagonal or vertical ‘tubing’ on the frame.

In terms of manufacturing, plastic injection moulding is the selected process; therefore please ensure that you adhere to the specific design criteria. The main criteria include, rounding radius's, even wall thickness throughout (except on ribs perpendicular to outside walls), no undercut shapes and the specification of an appropriate polymer. Further, this project will test your design ability, model making skills and computer modelling ability.

- Your design must focus on the ‘design thinking’ related to semantics for the appropriate    use of your product.
- You should address issues around the eventual manufacture of the individual part/s.
- You are required to make 2 prototypes in varied and appropriate colour scheme.
  Each prototype must weigh between 50g - 100g.

The final concept is taken into SolidWorks in order to finalise the design and work on details such as measurements, release tapers and shut-offs.
